What are bed bugs?
Bed bugs are tiny-sized, brownish, 1 to 7mm long, wingless and flat insects. Bed bugs depend on human blood and warm-blooded animal for their meal but they can live several months without their meal. Human blood is especially a food offering for bed bugs.
Bed bug bites have different reactions very with people. Their bites appear as red welts on skin which usually are very itchy. One interesting thing that can scare you, even more, is bed bug doesn’t bite once and leave; they bite you in a group of many bites.
Bed bugs are unisexual or bisexual?
Bed bugs are unisexual insects. Female bed bugs lay single eggs or clusters of eggs. A female bedbug can lay 1 to 5 eggs at a time and up to 500 eggs in a lifetime. Eggs are approximately 1 mm in size and placed in small cervices to keep them safe.
Within two weeks eggs hatch and immature bed bugs crave for a blood meal, thus immediately begin to feed. Immature bed bugs or young bed bugs are called “Nymphs”, which look alike mature bed bugs (smaller in size) pass through five stages before reaching maturity.
What disease you can get from a bed bug?
Bed bugs are a nuisance and irritating, and their bites are annoying and itchy but they don’t spread any disease. In some cases, bed bug bites can be transferred into skin infection, as bed bug bites lead to itchy skin, and excessive scratching can lead to skin irritation.
Bed bug-like triatomines also known as kissing bugs can cause deadly diseases like “Chagas disease”. Kissing bugs are famous between Americas. Research has confirmed that American has the most number of Chagas disease cases.
How long do bed bugs live?
The life of bed bugs usually ranges from four to six months. However, in favorable conditions, they can live up to a year.
Bed bugs can survive even without a meal for a long time.
Do bed bugs go away on their own?
The answer is bed bugs are deadly pest and does not go away by themselves. You need to take them out by using pesticides, high heat or extreme cold methods, or by using some other methods.
Even if one female bed bug survives. It can turn into a whole infestation again in just a few days. So you need to terminate the bed bug problem very attentively.
What kills bed bugs immediately?
Bed bug and their eggs die at high temperatures at 122°f (50°c). And by steam temperature 212°f (100°c). Also, low temperatures like 3.2°f (minus 16°c) can kill bed bugs.
Reports stated that a temperature that is below minus 4°f (minus 20°c) can kill bed bugs in 48 hours.
